Robert Izzard's page of astronomical happiness
I am an astrophysicist in the Stellar Astrophysics group
at the Argelander Institute for Astronomy,
part of the University of Bonn.

I work on:
  • The Evolution of Single and Binary Stars
  • Stellar Nucleosynthesis
  • Astrostatistics of single and multiple stellar systems
  • Chemically peculiar stars
  • Globular clusters and their multiple stellar generations
  • Chemical evolution of the Galaxy
  • The progenitors of Gamma-Ray Bursts
  • Computational astrophysics

  • Summer Term 2012/13 teaching highlights:
Binary Stars (6944)
Scientific Writing (6951)
Technical Seminar (6964)
Astrosem (6961)
Stellar Astrophysics Seminar (6953)
Note that my classes will start the week of 15th April

Announcement! Binary-stars Conference: Setting a new standard in the analysis of binary stars

I chair the AIfA's IT steering committee and our professor meetings, I am also on the AIfA board (Vorstand).

  • The rotation rates of massive stars: the role of binary interaction through tides, mass transfer and mergers de Mink, Langer, Izzard, Sana and de Koter (2013) ApJ; 764, 166
  • BINSTAR: a new binary stellar evolution code. Tidal interactions Siess, L.; Izzard, R. G.; Davis, P. J.; Deschamps, R. (2013) A&A; 550, 100
  • Classical Cepheids Require Enhanced Mass Loss Neilson, Langer, Engle, Guinan and Izzard (accepted for publication in (2012) ApJ; 760L, 18)
  • The occurrence of nitrogen-enhanced metal-poor stars: implications for the initial mass function in the early Galactic halo Pols, Izzard, Stancliffe and Glebbeek (A&A, 547, 76, also on arXiv)
  • Binary Interaction Dominates the Evolution of Massive Stars
(Sana et al., Science 337, 444)

Why I have a cricket bat in my office

At the NAM 2011 with Albert and Liz, doing real observing and getting my free Jodcast T-shirt (in exchange for an interview!).
