The Cip-Pool in the Argelander Institute for Astronomy

The Cip-Pool was build in 2006 and contains 18 Terminals/PCs and a teacher Termianl/PC which is connected to a beamer for instructions. In 2006 simple terminals were bought which were connected to three main linux servers. This was necessary to reduce the heat and noise coming from 19 PCs. Since these terminals were quite too slow for most of the interactive graphic programs new small PCs were bought in 2012. At the moment we are using Ubuntu 12.04 as the main OS.

Location / Opening hours

The Cip-Pool is located in the basement of the Argelander Institute of Astronomy in the room 0.007.

Since the room is mainly used for bachelor/master lectures there is NO free access during the week. This may change in the future.

Printing

For the Cip-Pool we have installed the printer lj4050. Please use this printer only! From a terminal you can print Postscript-Files (PS or EPS) with:

lpr -Plj4050 filename

Please don"t send any other filetypes via lpr to the printer. These jobs will probably block the whole printer system!

For other filetypes e.g. PDF you have to use acroread, gv, evince or other programs. Please don't forget to choose lj4050 as the printer!

Login from outside with ssh

We provide a ssh-connection from outside the Cip-Pool for reading/writing files into the users home directories.

Linux/Mac OS:

You can use the following command:

ssh -X username@cipserv1.astro.uni-bonn.de

Replace username with your username. In this environment you are able to execute text command as well as graphical programs.

You can also use scp or sftp for file transfer.

Windows:

There are a couple of ssh-programs available for Windows. One good program is putty. The host you have to connect to is cipserv1.astro.uni-bonn.de and port 22 (ssh). You will prompted for a username and password. Please refer to the manual how to configure a X11-forwarding session if you want to start graphical programs in the connected terminal.

For file transfer with scp or sftp there is a program called winscp.

Using VNC

We offer also the possibility to use VNC to connect to the Cip-Pool PCs. At the moment a VNC connection is ony possible to cipserv1 which has an older Ubuntu 10.04 installation.

HowTo:

Session creation:

  1. Login into cipserv1.astro.uni-bonn.de via ssh
  2. use vncserver DISPLAYNAME to create a VNC session
  3. Logout from cipserv1

DISPLAYNAME can be from :1 to :1000. If you don't give a DISPLAYNAME vncserver will create one for your. Please look at the output of the command, you will see something similar to cipserv1:1, the the DISPLAYNAME is :1 . If you start vncserver the first time you will be asked to a session password. This is not your user account password.

Session deletion:

  1. Login into cipserv1.astro.uni-bonn.de via ssh
  2. use vncserver -kill DISPLAYNAME to kill the VNC session
  3. Logout from cipserv1.

DISPLAYNAME is the same as you used during the session creation, please don't forget this number!

Session connection:

Linux:

You can use the program vncviewer with

vncviewer cipserv1.astro.uni-bonn.de:DISPLAYNAME

MacOS:

MacOS is providing an internal VNC viewer, which you can get from the Finder menu "Go->Connect to server". Please specify the server address as
vnc://cipserv1.astro.uni-bonn.de:PORT . PORT is 5900 + DISPLAYNAME, :13 is then PORT 5913.

An alternative is to use the package TigerVNC. This package provides e.g. the vncviewer program as described in the Linux section above.

Windows:

Please use Google to find a suitable program for viewing VNC sessions. If you need a port to configure a session Look at the MacOS description for the correct port.
