===================================================

=== Registration is now open! ===

We invite you to participate in the

      German ALMA Community Days 2012

that will be held in Bonn on 5-6 June 2012.

The call for ALMA Cycle 1 proposals is expected towards the end of May
2012, with a deadline in mid July and observations anticipated to start
in January 2013. For a review of Cycle 0 and to prepare the community for
Cycle 1, the German ALMA Regional Centre organizes the German ALMA
Community Days 2012 in Bonn on 5-6 June 2012.

The programme include sessions on:

- ALMA in Cycle 0 and in Cycle 1:
introduction to ALMA, Science Verification, ALMA Cycle 1 capabilities
and the first scientific ALMA results
- Observing with ALMA:
introduction to the ALMA Observing Tool, proposal review and phase 2
processes, quality assurance procedures and the ALMA pipeline and its
   products
- Available user support and German ALMA-related projects:
the EU-ARC and the German ARC node, ARTIST, CATS, CDMS and STAR FORMAT

In addition, we offer hands-on workshops on proposal preparation for
novice and advanced users. Please note that workshop places are limited
and will be assigned on a "first come, first served" basis.

Registration is now open! Please use our web form at
http://www.astro.uni-bonn.de/ARC/alma2012.shtml#registration to register

Pre-announcement for ALMA Cycle 1 Early Science Observations
============================================================

The European ALMA Regional Centre has released a pre-announcement for
ALMA Cycle 1 Early Science Observations. The Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO)
expects to start the next cycle of Early Science observations (Cycle 1)
in January 2013. A Call for Proposals for Early Science Cycle 1 will be
issued at the end of May 2012, with an anticipated deadline for proposal
submission in mid-July. ALMA Early Science Cycle 1 observations will start
in January 2013 and span 10 months. It is anticipated that approximately
800 hours of array time will be available for Cycle 1 projects. As in the
current Cycle 0, Cycle 1 operations will be conducted on a best efforts
basis.

Anticipated Cycle 1 capabilities include:

- Thirty two 12-m antennas in the main array, nine 7-m antennas (for
short baselines) and two 12-m antennas (for making single-dish maps) in
   the Atacama Compact Array (ACA)
- Receiver bands 3, 6, 7 & 9 (wavelengths of about 3, 1.3, 0.8 and 0.45 mm)
- Baselines up to 1km
- Both single field interferometry and mosaics

In order to facilitate the assessment of the submitted proposals, users
are encouraged to submit a Notice of Intent by May 15.

For more details, please see the full Cycle 1 announcement at
http://almascience.eso.org/news/pre-announcement-for-cycle-1. Detailed
information on Cycle 1 will also be published in the Call for Proposals.

2012 at ESO Headquarters in Garching. The aim is to prepare the European
Astronomical Community for Cycle 1 of ALMA Early Science Operations. The
first day will feature a series of technical and scientific presentations
related to ALMA, the European ARC and capabilities in Cycle 1. The second
and third days of the workshop will be dedicated to hands-on tutorials
focusing on the preparation of Cycle 1 observing proposals.
