First announcement: German ALMA Community Days 2012
===================================================

We invite you to participate in the

   German ALMA Community Days 2012

that will be held in Bonn on 5-6 June 2012.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is the most
ambitious mm and submm telescope in operation. When complete in 2013 it
will comprise 66 antennas. ALMA started scientific operations with 16
antennas on 30 September 2011 and continues to operate in Early Science
Cycle 0 mode until the end of 2012. With ALMA already providing
unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution at mm and sub-mm
wavelengths, the first scientific results of these Cycle 0 observations
are truely exciting. The capabilities and timeline for ALMA Early Science
Cycle 1 are expected to be announced in April 2012, with a proposal
deadline in July 2012 and a start of Cycle 1 observations at the beginning
of 2013.

For a review of Cycle 0 and to prepare the community for Cycle 1, the
German ALMA Regional Centre will organize the German ALMA Community Days
2012 in Bonn on 5-6 June 2012. The first day will be dedicated to a review
of Cycle 0, including Early Science results, detailed information on Cycle
1, an overview of the support available to German ALMA users, and
ALMA-related projects. On the second day, a hands-on introduction to the
ALMA Observing Tool will be offered to novice users as well as one-on-one
technical support for advanced (prospective) ALMA users with individual
ALMA projects.

Please mark the dates in your calendar!

Registration will open in early April. Please watch this mailing list for
further announcements. Alternatively, you can pre-register by sending an
email to arc[at]astro.uni-bonn.de.

With best regards,

Stefanie Muehle (for the German ARC node)

incorporating meetings of MIST and UK Solar Physics, will take place at
the University of Manchester on 27-30 March 2012. The meeting is being
organised by the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics in collaboration
with the Astronomische Gesellschaft.

During the meeting, the German, UK and ESO ARC nodes will hold ALMA
science sessions on Tuesday morning and on Wednesday morning, as well as
an ALMA lunch on Tuesday. In addition, ARC node staff will be present at
the meeting with a dedicated ALMA stall.
