Cosmic Magnetism 2014

DFG Research Unit FOR 1254

Magnetisation of Interstellar and Intergalactic Media. The Prospects of Low-Frequency Radio Observations

will take place from September 29 to October 2, 2014  at
Hotel Schützenhof (Eitorf, about 25 km from Bonn)

:

This fifth meeting of the Research Unit has two goals. First, it is to welcome all new members who joined us for the second funding period. Second, it gives them and our guests the opportunity to convey and exchange the achievements that have been made over the past three years. Meanwhile, LOFAR has become the ‘working-horse’ at low radio frequencies, with spectacular results on normal star-forming and on radio galaxies as well as on clusters of galaxies coming up and having been published. The low-frequency (i.e. below about 1 GHz) spectra of normal galaxies are now being established, and the resulting spectral shapes need to be interpreted in terms of the physical properties of the galaxies. A big harvest of radio relics has been accomplished in many clusters of galaxies, using the GMRT, JVLA and LOFAR. The resulting radio spectra now encompass two orders of magnitude and allow to put theoretical models to the test - much better than before. Significant progress has also been achieved in the Research Unit in terms of MHD modeling of galaxies and galaxy clusters, as well as on developing modern tools of data analysis based on Bayesian methods. The annual meetings are also intended to widen our "magnetic horizon" on research fields that are not covered by the members of the Research Unit. In 2014, we selected the topic of radio galaxies and jets and invited world-class experts. In order to discuss all of these achievements, we get together with our Research Unit and our guests once again in a nice and convenient conference centre. We are looking forward to seeing you in Eitorf.
