Back on dry land, the forces of the universe - or at least the solar system - are aligned to make Zambia a popular destination for 2001. A June 21 total eclipse will plunge southern Africa into an arc of darkness for a little over three minutes; Zambia is one of the most politically stable places to watch. With tensions rising in neighboring Zimbabwe, a number of vacationers have booked weeklong luxury eclipse safaris, some for as much as $15,000 per head.

On the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, more budget-conscious daredevils who prefer living the wild life to looking at it are heading to the colonial city of Livingstone-fast emerging as the new adventure capital of Victoria Falls. Outfitters there send them down the lower Zambezi's churning rapids on river boards and jet boats, or dangle them on wires to abseil - something like rappelling - off the sheer cliffs of Victoria Falls Gorge. Death-cheaters also fly microlights-cutting-edge aircraft that are combination go-carts and hang gliders-above the countryside and through the spray of the falls."

15.12.2000 - So geht's dem Zambian Eclipse Coordination Committee

The URL for our website is www.eclipse.com.zm. Yes the Secretariat is moving though at a slow pace because the Coordinator who happens to be the Chief Executive of the Zambia National Tourist Board fell ill (sever pneumonia) when She visited UK (for the World Tourism Congress). She is still ill! We however have somebody acting in her place. At an average of 6 people per sub-committee, we are about 42 people in the whole exercise. The Secretariat has only 6 people.

I believe you have already helped quite a lot but would appreciate any furthey help you can give us. I think if you can assist in putting the image of our country well in view of what the media is saying in Germany, that would make us forge ahead better. Another issue is that of the eclipse glasses. We don't have any at the moment. [...]

For those who have been having difficulty contacting Zambia and are wondering about their eclipse website (http://homepages.go.com/~elampi) I have recently heard from Peter Kalebwe, and copy parts of his message below for your information.

Subject: OUR SYSTEM

Yes, Francis, our system was down for quite some time. In fact, it took so long to come back to normal that I even ignored trying only to be reminded by our operator today that the system got back on its feet. [...] How are things going? Is the government still keeping aloof? Looks you can do better just organising as a non-governmental body. We are delayed here because of government inertia. [...] The website in on but scanty. As soon as the information and publicity committee starts working, I believe it will be crowded with information.

Sincere regards

Gelernt habe ich u.a. Folgendes:

November!

5.9.2000 - "Big fire season underway in Southern Africa"

"Fires routinely scorch the Southern African landscape at this time of year [...]. But this year's burning season, which reaches its peak this month, could be nearly twice as big as usual, according to researchers taking part in a NASA-supported field experiment." GSFC Press Release.

... vom Terra-Satelliten: "Near the right-hand edge of the images is the location where the Zambezi plunges into Victoria Falls, considered to be among the most spectacular waterfalls in the world." Na dann nichts wie hin!

19.8.2000 - ein Bonner Reisebüro meldet sich bei mir ...

Sehr geehrter Herr Fischer!

www.reisebuero-suedstadt/sofi-seite.htm

Stefan Krause

11.8.2000 - ein Jahr "danach"...

"Eclipse fever alive and well" - "it appears many of those who saw it last August - with or without cloud, have decided they want to see another one. And they are prepared to travel thousands of miles to see it, chasing its shadow all the way to southern Africa": BBC Online. Bezüglich Zambia ist dort u.a. zu lesen: "In Zambia preparations for an unknown number of visitors are under way. Hotels and lodges are being spruced up, temporary campsites are planned and there is even talk of festivals springing up within the zone of totality. The authorities are grappling with many of the same issues that faced Devon and Cornwall last year, the difference being that tourism in Zambia is far less developed and the country's infrastructure and road network more restrictive. UK eclipse expert Professor John Parkinson has just returned from Lusaka where he has been offering advice to the authorities."

Daniel,

Thank you for raising these issues. The Eclipse Coordination Committee is meeting tomorrow to discuss several issues including what you have raised here. I have also forwarded your message to several people so that they can answer some of these questions. As far as I know, there is no fuel shortage here in Zambia. The market is liberalised so that anyone is free to import the commodity. I don't know about Zimbabwe. We don't forsee any unrest in the near future.[...] As for the maps, we have better scaled ones than what you have mentioned. Certainly a scale of 1: 2 200 000 is too course. It is possible to get one with a scale of 1: 250 000. One can actually order these maps or you can source them on arrival.

Will get back to you
Regards
Peter in Lusaka

2.8.2000 - aus einem Artikel von Espenak in Sky & Tel. 9/2000 S.34

The highway west of Lusaka is rough and slow but under repair. It leaves the path about 200 km west of the capital so that travel to eclipse sites will require a turn northward along roads in worse condition. Kafue National Park offers an attractive location, but accomodations are very limited and travel requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. [...] Lusaka [...] provides the most-convenient and least-expensive access to the center line. The Great North Road out of the capital is a fine highway in good repair and reaches the middle of the eclipse track about 40 km north of the city. The rolling landscape is made up of mixed farmland and bush, providing plenty of locations that are suitable for stopping to observe the eclipse.

1) Is there a fuel shortage in the region which could compromise plans for car-based eclipse expeditions? In the "Oil & Gas" section of the newspaper Iran Daily of July 27 it is reported that "the fuel is critically short" in Zimbabwe, where also the fuel prices have been hiked between 128 and 19 percent recently and "observers say the government is risking severe public unrest with what are the sharpest fuel price increases in years."

2) A cautionary horror story on why you MUST have a travel health insurance that includes free transfer back to your home country has appeared in the "Travel" section of the Sunday Times (of London) on July 30. A British family had to spend 20 000 British pounds to have an elderly relative rescued after he hurt himself badly running from elephants in the Luangwa Game Reserve in Zambia. The medical services both in Zambia and Zimbabwe charged thousands of pounds for operations and transport while the British government did nothing. It eventually took 13 days to bring the injured man back to Britain where he died a week later...

3) And finally I've received a road map of Zambia from amazon.de today, published by freytag & berndt (ISBN 3-85084-852-3). Its scale is 1 : 2 200 000 and it looks rather new, with many detailled maps of the major NPs on the back. Since our group plans a big journey with 4WD cars through the 'Wild West' of Zambia I'm wondering whether this one is the best map available at all (the geographical information could be better, for example) or whether one can get higher-resolution maps in Lusaka, be it on arrival or by mail order from some agency or shop.

29.7.2000 - ein medizinisches Gutachten von P. Kalebwe

To the shadow chasers,

Travel in tropical and subtropical climates always carries a risk of malaria, and travellers should be aware of this both before and during travel. Although this time of year in Zambia there's a lesser risk, everyone should prepare adequately for travel to outling areas or countries where it is either hotter, wetter or a combination of both. [...]

Symptoms of malaria are reminiscent of influenza; these can include chills, fever, severe headches, muscle aches, and occassionaly sickness ans diarrhoea. In addition, parasites may remain dormant (in the liver) for a long time and can cause symptoms to re-appear even years later. [...] There's no vaccination yet available for malaria but measures can be taken, including modern drugs.

The Anopheles mosquito usually bites between sunset and surise, and avoidance of the bites is the best measure one can take; these include the application of repellent to exposed areas and the wearing of long sleeved shirts and long trousers if outdoors at these times. A mosquito net (preferably treated with permethrin) over one's bed and the spraying of the repellent or insecticide on one's clothing and sleeping area should help. [...]

20.7.2000 - ein relevantes Posting aus der belgischen SoFi-Liste

I wish to counteract the information which many people have come to harbour that all the accommodation in Lusaka is fully booked. As Chairman of the Eclipse Coordination Committe, I have made a good survey and found that a good number of lodges and guest houses are still vacant and willing to take in bookings. Infact, we will soon call a meeting to meet all the owners of hotels, motels, lodges nad guest houses. We are then going to draw up a list of all the vacant lots and post it on mailing list.

12.7.2000 - ein Blitztrip nach Lusaka mit einem Charterflieger?

Werte Sofi-Interessenten !

Hundreds of fires are set every year during the dry season in Central Africa. This true color image from NASA's Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) shows dozens of smoke plumes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on June 29. Residents burn away scrub and brush annually in the woody savanna to clear land for farming and grazing.

ZIM[BABWE] WEATHER - For MOST of June we had 50 - 100% cloud on MOST days - only 2 or 3 completely cloudfree. And July has started as badly (:((()

But I am getting reports from the Zambezi valley too and will post them soon.

28. 6. 2000 - ein Posting auf der belgischen SoFi-Liste

Hello everybody,

My name is Evans Lampi and I am working with Peter Kalebwe on the solar eclipse coordinating committee here in Zambia. I am dealing with publicity matters. I am currently creating a website that will give information on some of the questions you may ask if you intend to travel here, such as accreditation for journalists, immigration, accomodation, customs e.t.c. I hope I can finish within the coming week.

26. 6. 2000 - eine E-Mail von einem Autoverleiher in Zambia

Daniel,

I hope all is fine with you. We are in receipt of your e-mail through Mr. Peter Kalebwe, of your intensions to travel to the wild west.

We are a well established car hire firm with a vehicle fleet which includes 4x4's.

We are able to provide the 4x4's suitable for the area. Kindly let us know how many people will be travelling, how long you will be staying and the places you want to go to.

We will only be able to advise on the rates when we are told the number of days the vehicles needed.

Once you are booked with us we will make available mobile and satellite phones for rent at reasonable rates.

Best regards
Frida

21.+23. 6. 2000 - Postings von Peter Kalebwe in einer belgischen Mailing-Liste

Hello there,

The 22nd of June was just sparsely clouded with the Sun shining through almost all day. 3 pm was no exception. Very similar weather has prevailed even today the 23rd of June. Looks promising!

Regards

Peter in Lusaka

----------------------------------------

To the shadow chasers,

Those of you who looked at the satellite picture for southern Africa on monday the 19th of june, can recall that there was a thick cloud band hovering over South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique and part of this cloud made our skies partly cloudy on monday. Well, this band of cloud arrived yesterday, the 20th of june and nobody saw the sun and temperatures were low. However, by sunset, most of the cloud had dispersed and the night was very clear.

Today, the 21st of June has seen one of the most clear days we have ever had this month. What with the sun shining form sunrise to sunset! Any eclipse chaser must just pray that this weather repeats on the 21st June,2001!

ZAMBIA READIES ITSELF FOR ECLIPSE

The Zambia National Tourist Board (ZNTB) is working on measures to take advantage of the two solar eclipses likely to pass through Zambia to sell the country within and outside and to attract more tourists for the events. The eclipses will also pass through Angola, Northern Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa and Madagascar. They will be visible in Zambia on June 21, 2001 and December 2, 2002. The eclipse will be more visible in the outskirts and surrounding areas of Lusaka and Chisamba area. Lodges and hotels are already fully booked and ZNTB is working with most accommodation establishments in Lusaka and the surrounding areas to open up their grounds as camping sites for that period. So far there?s been a positive response from the lodges and more were expected to be approached on the same. ZNTB with the private sector have also sat down to discuss how best information on the eclipse can be disseminated and efforts are also being made with the Physics department at the University of Zambia to hold workshops to sensitize the public on the eclipses. (Entdeckt von H. Lüthen - gibt einen Kwacha-Punkt :-)

ECLIPSE 2001

Following the hype of the solar eclipse that passed over Europe in August of this year there has been great interest in the next such event, June 21st 2001 will see an eclipse passing over Zambia and Zimbabwe. We are hoping that our weather will be a little better than that experienced in South West England when the moon eclipsed the sun and the whole event was eclipsed by the clouds. Unfortunately for those of you that have not already arranged your trip all of our camps are full as are most other camps over a wide area. The rush of bookings has been far greater and far earlier than we saw for the millennium.

20. 6. 2000 - ein Fax vom deutschen Botschafter in Lusaka

Sehr geehrter Herr Fischer,

Dear Daniel Fischer,

In response to your query, I must say that I am a Zambian born and brought up in Zambia by Zambian parents. I have not cancelled my trip to Belgium and Iam looking forward to seeing all of you.

Zambia at the moment does not have any astronomical society; there does not seem to be sufficient interest among the people or is there! Probably we have to research. Looks the chase to beat the pressures of living cannot leave us with enough room to pursue astronomical interests. But there are some of us who are taking time reading magazines such as astronomy and sky and telescopes and trying to organise others to join. The coming eclipse event has given us enough opportunity to pursue this matter further. And you bet we are trying to come up with a local package for those who may fly to this country single handedly but would like to join some tour group.

See you in Belgium

Beatrice,

I hope you have a fine day. I am in receipt of a mail from Daniel Fischer based in Germany. Daniel would like to have information related to Travel in the Wild West, i.e. inside or even East of Kafue National Park perhaps as far west as Zambezi using a convoy of 4wheel drive cars. You can see that if he intends to get the cars from here, then you have a hell of planning to do! He can't find information related to travel in this part of Zambia. Please assist him. Contact him directly on e-mail:dfischer@astro.uni-bonn.de Please bring this information to the attention of all your members.

I hope you sort out this issue as soon aspossible
