The annular solar eclipse of October 3, 2005

as seen from near the northern limit in Tunsia with little or no filtering at all

Negatives # 3,13,21,30 and 37: Phases of the eclipse some time and shortly before annularity (with lots of Baily's Beads appearing between the crescent horns already), in mid- annularity, shortly afterwards (with a splendid necklace of Beads) and longer afterwards. With the exception of the center shot (through two layers of thin solar filter) the images are deliberately overexposed to bring out faint detail at and in between the crescent horns.

Negatives # 4 to 6 and 10 to 14: Appearance of the solar chromosphere and then a string of Beads between the crescent horns in the seconds leading up to the 2nd contact and closing of the ring. It stayed closed for some 1 minute and 50 to 55 seconds from our site, enough to catch some breath and set a better focus.

Negatives 27 to 37: Breaking up of the ring into a particularly striking chain of Beads and reappearance of the chromosphere between the crecent horns. The pictures before ring closing were all taken at 1/1000 sec, the first ones after its breaking up - accidentally - at 1/500. This mistake actually enhanced the visibility of the chromosphere without the bright photospheric crescent saturating the film completely yet. Print film an amazing thing ...
