Title: VLT observations of NGC 1097 tidal tails

Poster file: poster_Galianni.pdf

Abstract:

We investigate the nature of large stellar condensations along the faint optical ‘jet-like’ tidal tails of NGC 1097. These two closely resemble dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). There is evidence (Higdon & Wallin 2003) that this ‘jet-like’ tidal feature originated from a minor merging event, and is composed by G-type stars. Here we try to ascertain if these dSphs formed from in situ star accretion along the tidal tails, or represents the remnant of the minor merger galaxy.
