Long Baseline Week 1

The first busy week for long baselines takes place in Bonn (MPIfR and AIfA) 21-25 May 2012.

Local organisers are James Anderson (MPIfR), Andreas Horneffer (MPIfR) and Olaf Wucknitz (AIfA).

We will probably broadcast some sessions via EVO under the title “LOFAR Long Baseline Week”. The password will be sent by email and can be provided on request. You may also use the meeting URL.

Logistics

The MPIfR and AIfA are in the same building at

Auf dem Hügel 69/71
53121 Bonn
Germany

Google maps

There is a good connection by public transport to the city centre. The easiest option are buses 610 and 611 from the central station (“Hauptbahnhof”). They go alternately every ten minutes. Get out at the stop “Immenburgpark”, cross the road and enter the MPIfR through the main entrance (ring the bell). Mention at the reception that you are here for the LOFAR Long Baseline Week, then find us in room 0.01 to the left. You make also take other buses (608,609,843,845,…) to “Auf dem Hügel” and then walk 5 minutes to the institute.

For hotel information look here.

Goals

  • Start “Long Baseline Cookbook”, maybe as part of standard imaging cookbook.
  • Test our scripts.
  • Determine sensitivity limits for fringe-fitting and imaging.

Programme

details tbd

Topics for discussion and to work on: phasing up superterp, conversion to circular, X-Y offsets, dipole beams, route through AIPS, calibration with BBS, standard imagers, MSSS, working with raw-voltage data (e.g. for Jupiter and pulsars), wide-field imaging, correlations with LWA, GMRT, UTR-2, ionospheric correction with TECOR or Carlos' script, fringe-rate imaging (also for MSSS and Cyril's drawMS), …

We will start Monday morning at 10:00 in MPI 0.01, but most participants will arrive later. Should you come earlier, you can find me (Olaf) on the AIfA (rear) side of the building in office 2.008. Or call me at +49-(0)228-73-1772.

Computer access

You are welcome to copy any data to your laptop and work locally. This is probably the best options for smaller data sets, because the network may come to its limits if everybody is working remotely.

CEP

In order to log in to cep (1 or 2), you can with your laptop either go via your own account elsewhere (at the MPI the portal and portal2 gateways should work) or use the dedicated local server lofarws.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de (IP 134.104.18.141) on which the external participants will get an account.

See here for an overview of the available disk space on all nodes and allocations for the Long Baseline Week.

Colleagues at ASTRON were so nice to prepare a stable version that you can enable with
use LofIm_release 16May2012

There is also the possibility to go via widemap (see below) in case other options do not work.

WIDEMAP

This is a small local cluster at the AIfA (University of Bonn) next door. Details on the options there can be found here.
