Millimeter/Sub-Millimeter Astronomy
Primarily through observations at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths, our group investigates star formation, the evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters, and the dense interstellar medium in galaxies.
We are involved in the the CCAT (FYST) telescope project and in the COSMOS survey. Together with Prof. Schilke's group at Cologne university, we serve as the German node of the European ALMA Regional Center (ARC). We participate in the DFG Collaborative Research Center SFB1601, and we are members of the research networks PUNCH4NFDI and Big Bang to Big Data (B3D).

c.v. I studied physics at the University of Cologne and at the University of California, Berkeley, where I obtained my Ph.D. in Physics in 1989. I held postdoctoral positions at Princeton University, the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris, the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching, and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR) in Bonn. I teach master’s-level courses on the interstellar medium and radio astronomy, as well as undergraduate courses in theoretical physics. Since 2004, I have been a professor at the University of Bonn. I served as AIfA Director from 2009 to 2012, chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 2014 to 2016, member of the Faculty Council from 2018 to 2020, and Vice Dean from 2020 to 2024.
